Happy Birthday wishes go out to both lazydwarf and luciamad I hope you both have fantastic days ♥

People that know this stuff better than me, explain what a one shot is in terms of storyfinding comms.. I thought it meant a one off story, but that doesn't make sense. Because do people really only want to read multi part epics where the total of each chapter is less than 1000 words? Wait, what am I saying? Of course they do.

I have such a love/hate thing going on with storyfinder comms. 1

I want to read epic length stories where someone gets impregnated by aliens. and someone steps up to be the baby daddy, but there's a crash and the baby is aborted so the boymomma loses his mind with grief and there's blood vomitting and then Mikey dies.

I'll read any pairing but I hate waycest, Gerard/Ray, Bob/anyone, Mikey/Frank and no Ray sex please, ewww. No stand alones, and it has to be rated G or above.

1 In which I mean I love them beyond reason really, and yes, I'd read that.

Man, I know. I often boggle when I read stuff like that, and it happens a lot. There's no shame in liking a specific pairing, just state it up front and stop with the not wanting the others.

Editing is hard, but you can do it! Think of the awesome story you'll have at the end.

Thank you sweetie! I'm going to definitely try to have a good one. :)

Excellent! I hope people spoil you today :)

I always understood 'one shot' to mean a single story rather than a series -- by series, I mean a set of stories each of which is complete in itself, but which are all set in the same 'world' with the same version of the characters. Not a single story posted as chapters.

But that might not be the right definition for bandom.

Also I'm confused. Is the person asking about a story they actually read before, do they expect someone to write it for them, or are they asking on the off-chance that there just happens to be an alien MRPEG with space-ships crashing and ass-miscarriages and blood vomitting and then Mikey dies?

That makes sense. It's just not a description I'd seen used until bandom, other fandoms may use it too.

Someone really needs to give me a fandom specific fannish terms dictionary.

Well, that description is mine, a sort of pulled together list of stuff I see all the time. But it's surprising how often insane stuff like that comes along.

I've seen some crazy requests, really specific ones too. Which always makes me wonder if they really expect someone to know a story like that, or are just fishing and hope something thinks that's the best idea ever OMG! I must write that.

Sadly the paring thing happens all the time though.

... I so love how no matter who is involved with the aliens, there's the "Mikey dies."

(Because Mikey has to be the one to die in badfic. I have no idea why, but I see it so much I sort of suspect it's in the rulebook.)
turps33 From: turps33 Date: July 10th, 2008 10:14 am (UTC) (Link)
Can you imagine that rulebook?

(1) When writing eating disorders, you may only use Mikey, Ryan or Brendon
(2) There must be lots of blood, vomitted for dramatic effect.
(3) The words 'weeping' 'pulsating' 'ringed bud' 'stiff member' must be used at least once.
(4) Someone must cry.
(5) Wrists must be willow-ey.
(6) Assbabies are always better as a product of rape.
(7) Mikey must always die!!!11!!!

You should post about stuff I can actually comment on :-p

You know about Mikeyway! You could be sad he died!

I want to read epic length stories where Dean gets impregnated by aliens. and Sam steps up to be the baby daddy, but there's a crash and the baby is aborted so the boymomma loses his mind with grief and there's blood vomitting and then Dean dies.

NO WINCEST, WEECEST, DADDYCEST, RPS OR HET. Other than that, I'll read anything. No stand alones, and it has to be rated G or above.

Yep, sounds familiar.

It's scary how well it fits.

Fans, insane in every fandom ever imagined.
luciamad From: luciamad Date: July 10th, 2008 02:30 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! Already quite good as I am "sick" today.

Why's it got to be Mikey's always the one to die? Poor kid.
turps33 From: turps33 Date: July 10th, 2008 02:49 pm (UTC) (Link)
Being 'sick' on your birthday is good :)

Poor Mikey, I'm sure it's just so Gerard can be all angst ridden.

To me "one shot" definitely means a single story that's got absolutely no connection to any other story and there's no planned sequels or other stories in the same universe. I know I've come across it before in other fandoms but I can't remember exactly where, perhaps in crack_van recs. It's not really the same thing as a "standalone" 'cause that might take place in the same universe as other stories or have planned sequels.

The things people ask about in story finder/story rec comms can be so mindboggling. (Not to mention the idiots who ask for recs in finder comms and for specific stories in a rec comms - IF YOU CAN'T READ COMM RULES HOW ON EARTH DO YOU MANAGE TO READ STORIES?!!! Uhm, I might feel a bit strongly about this :-)

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. So there might be a sensible reason for them not wanting a whole series of stories.

People are dumb, basically. I get that some of the requests sound ridiculous but I also know that sometimes all you want is a certain kind of story. But yeah, make sure you ask in the right place. It's not hard!

I think I read a SGA or Torchwood story like that, except there was no Mikey and he didn't die either. Woe. ;-)

It's interesting to see that they will read any pairing, though... *g*.
turps33 From: turps33 Date: July 11th, 2008 03:39 pm (UTC) (Link)
Hee! I'd imagine Torchwood fic can be the special kind of crack very easily.

It's interesting to see that they will read any pairing, though... *g*.

That drives me nuts! I mean, I get that sometimes you want to read something specific, so ask away about alien ass babies. But stop with the all pairings if you don't mean it!

Your love/hate thing for storyfinders comms in which you mean you love them beyond reason is so not surprising! I mean, for someone who enjoys bad!fics so much, I think it'd expected, some of those requests are like mini bad!fics... and sometimes they actually do link to real bad!fics so, really, it was made for you, right? lol
turps33 From: turps33 Date: July 26th, 2008 09:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
Storyfinder comms just make me happy. Also boggle often. Someone was asking for pedo fics yesterday and I just looked, then came back to see if anyone had linked anything.
kaethe From: kaethe Date: July 10th, 2008 08:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
Okay, so the person is expecting that this story has already been written? The mind boggles at the thought that two entirely different people would come up with that same idea.
turps33 From: turps33 Date: July 26th, 2008 06:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
I know! People are insane and stupid. Really all you can do is laugh or they'll make you nuts.
rikes From: rikes Date: July 12th, 2008 08:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
I regularly end up tracking popstoryfinders posts, just in case somebody finds the story and posts a link!
turps33 From: turps33 Date: July 26th, 2008 04:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh yes. I do that too! Then I get these strange names in comments in my in box and I'm all, the hell!? Then am overjoyed when I see an insane fic has been found.
